Omega-3 EPA & DHA are essential for our brain and cardiovascular health, but our bodies cannot produce on their own.
Fish obtain it through their diet, mainly from microalgae.
Omega-3 Starts with Microalgae
Fish are not the original source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These valuable nutrients originate primarily from microalgae, which naturally produce EPA and DHA. Fish accumulate these omega-3s by consuming microalgae directly or by eating smaller organisms that feed on microalgae.
EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) are important long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. EPA supports cardiovascular health and helps maintain a healthy inflammatory response, while DHA is an important structural component of the brain and eyes and supports normal brain and visual function.
Because the human body has limited ability to produce EPA and DHA from other omega-3 fatty acids, they are best obtained through the diet.
This means we don’t necessarily have to rely on fish to obtain marine omega-3s. Microalgae provide a direct, plant-like marine source of EPA and DHA—essentially going straight to the source rather than through the fish.
